Berkshire Botanical Garden

Volunteer Jobs

Visitor Center Greeter/Clerk

BBG Visitor Center is a fun and active hub of the Garden!  These volunteers are typically the first contact visitors have with the Garden and are responsible for welcoming visitors, charging admission, offering information about the Garden and surrounding area and assisting visitors with the purchase of gifts, snacks and refreshments.  A friendly personality, neat appearance and basic accounting skills are essential.  Weekly 4.5 hour shifts are offered morning or afternoon 7 days a week from May 1 until Columbus Day.

For more information please email mbeck@berkshirebotanical.org or call 413-320-4772

PS 2019 Potting Day

PS 2019 Cashier

Our Cashiers and Cashier Assistants are tasked with quickly and accurately ringing up purchases, applying discounts where appropriate, and always thanking and reminding shoppers that they are supporting BBG with their purchases.  Shoppers may have additional questions about their purchases which may require finding an ‘Ask Me’ volunteer.  Cashiers also find a plant loader to help shoppers with heavy or bulky items.  Experience working with cash registers, handling cash, check, and credit card transactions and making change is preferred.  The touch-screen “Square” point-of-sale system is very intuitive and easy to learn.  Cashiers need to be mindful of shoppers waiting in line and keep things moving.  BBG staff will make sure enough change is available and will remove large bills for deposit periodically during the day.  New cashiers will be contacted to attend a brief, mandatory training session prior to Plant Sale.

PS 2019 Greeter

Volunteers in this area greet people as they arrive.  On Friday, from 9:00 - 11:00 am, they will check membership cards as verification of membership.  If these are not available, they will check the printed member list or look them up in Salesforce.
They will also offer maps and handouts, thank people for coming and highlight that all of the purchases made beyond that point directly support the Garden. Greeters should be familiar with the layout and location of the tally area, cashiers, membership table and vendors in order to answer questions easily.  Orient new customers as to how the Plant Sale operates.

PS 2019 Loader/Paid Hold

Volunteers  assist customers with plants they have bought.  Customers with large orders may get their car to pick up purchases, and volunteers in this area help them carry and load their paid merchandise.  Volunteers may also be called on to work in other areas as needed. A willingness to work outside regardless of the weather, a good-natured disposition and a sense of humor are needed to help in this area.  Responsibilities may include some traffic directing to help ensure a safe environment.  Thank customers for supporting BBG with their purchases before they leave.

PS 2019 Membership

Must be familiar with membership options and the Garden overall.
Friday morning (during Members Only admission), volunteers are stationed at the front table to check member status if they did not bring their membership card.  There will be a printed membership list and an iPad with access to Salesforce member data base.  When the Plant Sale opens to the general public, membership volunteers will move to the BBG Membership Table.  There they will actively promote joining or renewing and assist customers with membership information and transactions.  All new and renewal transactions with names will be noted on a list, and membership cards and follow-up information will be mailed, not given on the spot.  Note on the tally sheet if a customer is a current member so that the cashiers can offer them the member discount.  Training will be provided for accessing the Salesforce member database and the Square point-of-sale system.

PS 2019 Tally

Talliers add up each shopper’s purchases by removing and counting the color-coded plant stakes and noting the total on a tally sheet.  They also tag purchases for pick-up and watch them while the customer proceeds to the cashier.  Talliers are friendly and helpful, and should mention to non-members, where appropriate, that one benefit of a BBG membership is that it provides a 10% discount on purchases and classes as well as free admission to the Garden throughout the season.  Direct new and renewing members to the Membership Table.
